What is overvoltage?

In the home power grid, the mains voltage is usually 230 V. Higher voltages can occur due to switching operations by the electricity suppliers or in the event of nearby lightning strikes, which cause damage to sensitive electrical and electronic equipment.

Whether and what damage occurs depends not only on the amount of the overvoltage, but also on the duration as well as on the “curve shape” (e.g. steep voltage increase). Overvoltages due to nearby lightning strikes are particularly dangerous, because lightning (partial) currents enter the house via the power supply network and can cause considerable damage there.
